Hello Again,To start out with we would like to announce we are moving into our new hangar located behind the Upper Deck Restaurant at the Richard I. Bong Airport in Superior, Wisconsin. We are just touching up some of the aesthetics and hope to complete the move by the end of this week. As we mentioned last time, our helicopters were out of service due to routine maintenance which was expected to last one week. Unfortunately, it took longer than we planned. Thankfully our Robinson R44’s (which we are leasing) annual inspection was completed last week and was put back into service last Thursday. We would like to thank our mechanic for squeezing us into his busy schedule making it possible for us to put the R44 back online. The purchase of our Schweizer 300c is officially complete! Our chief pilot is currently in Ohio flying back to Superior, Wisconsin. The acquisition of this ship went relatively smoothly with only a few minor hiccups which were not unusual or unexpected with this volume of paperwork. We expect the Schweizer to arrive in Superior, Wisconsin either tonight or tomorrow depending on the weather. Until next time make sure to keep the spinney side up, Your Friends at Lake Superior Helicopters Hello Everyone,We would like to keep you up to date on the progress here at Lake Superior Helicopters (LSH). For starters we just returned our leased Robinson R22 (N8362L) to Frederick, Maryland. Unlike flying N8362L to Superior which took 6 days due to a headwind and weather, the cross country flight back to Frederick went very well taking only a day and a half because of some strong tailwinds. The one thing shared between both flights was the beauty the pilots experienced when flying within 1000 feet of the ground over the vast countryside and the wonderful people they met along the way. Now with N8362L gone, we find ourselves here at LSH temporarily without a helicopter but everything is going smoothly with the acquisition of our new Schweizer 300c. If everything keeps going like this, it should be here ready to fly in a little over a week. Although N8362L was a good ship and actually one of the best performing R22’s many of us had ever flown, it was still limited because it was an R22. Now R22’s are great helicopters if you are on the smaller side but if you are not, they tend to be quite cramped. The R22’s maximum payload (fuel and pilot/ passenger) is 515 pounds and it is not known as a spacious ship especially for those of us who are much over six feet and weigh over 200 pounds. The Schweizer on the other hand is a three passenger ship (side by side) so it gives people with broader frames more shoulder room which is seriously lacking in R22’s. It also has generous head room for those who are taller so there is no more ducking your head or slouching in the seat to accommodate the low ceiling. The Schweizer has a maximum payload (fuel and pilot/ passenger) of 950 pounds which is 435 more pounds than an R22! Our three passenger Robinson R44, which is the big brother of the R22, is currently getting its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) required annual inspection and will be available for flights within about two weeks. Until next time make sure to keep the spinney side up, Your Friends at Lake Superior Helicopters | July 2010 (5) June 2010 (3) March 2010 (1) February 2010 (5) January 2010 (4) November 2009 (1) September 2009 (5) August 2009 (2) July 2009 (1) June 2009 (1) April 2009 (2) |
